Firstly, my thanks to all who attended the AGM. I am sure you found Simon's talk very informative and I hope you now appreciate better what the SPAB Mill Section has been doing for the first 75 years of its life.
Secondly, my thanks to those who helped by looking after the projector, making tea, clearing the hall etc.
We are now well into the season of openings and Trevor is trying hard to produce a rota for each month in turn.
The layout of the ground floor has been changed and seems to work well but we need more sales/supervisory staff. The tea-making position has now been partially screened off for Health & Safety reasons which means that if there is only one person attending to sales and counting visitor numbers no-one can deal with the tea.
We shall also need to have at least one 'roving steward', again for Health and Safety reasons, particularly for the Country Craft Fair day and the London Open House week-end. As I have said previously, such persons need not have technical knowledge about the mill, just good old-fashioned common sense and an appreciation of the possible dangers to visitors.
It is hoped that the Council will shortly clear what looks like a 'disaster area' to the west of the mill. They intend to spray the area to kill off underbrush then rake and level it so that it becomes more attractive.
Members may remember that last year the Friends hosted a regional conference of the British Association of Friends of Museums (BAfM) of which we are a member. This year their conference is being hosted by the Mildenhall Museum Society on the 17th June. After the conference there will be tours of the museum, especially the Mildenhall Treasure, and Mildenhall Church (c15th). BAfM inform us that, to date, there are not many prospective attendees and they would appreciate more support for the event. As those of us who would be likely to attend are involved in Planet Havering on the 16th/17th and preparation for the Craft Fair at the mill on the 18th, a volunteer to represent the Friends would be greatly appreciated.
We have also been asked if we would like to have a stand at the show by the Guild of Essex Craftsmen at Cressing Temple on the 9/10th September. Unfortunately I am unable to attend on this particular occasion and, again, we would be glad of volunteers to represent us.
Events like these are excellent opportunities for us to publicise the mill and our efforts and progress It would be very helpful if some of our members who are not otherwise committed would like to represent us at events of this nature.
