I and the committee wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. This will be busier than last year as we have more open days. More about this under the 'Next Season' heading below.
We extend our sympathies to Derrick Martin, whose wife died on the 29th December. For some months Derrick has been quietly working on the oat rolling machine which is situated on the stone floor of the windmill.
I also pass on New Year greetings from the Open House London team, thanking us for our efforts. The team works hard all the year preparing for Open House Week-end which, as many of you know, is a celebration of architecture in Greater London. Many buildings, both old and new, are open on this weekend, the Windmill being one of them. In fact it is probably our busiest week-end of the year. This is, in a way, unfortunate as it means our volunteers are not able to go and visit other buildings. At one time Open House Week-end was the fourth week-end and there was no problem. However, this year we shall try not to include those who are keen to go visiting other buildings on the rota of helpers at all or at least for only one day.
National Mills Week-end in May is another week-end when we shall try to do the same. It is very worth while visiting other mills to see the differences in machinery and also to see how they operate their openings - we can always learn something. We always have copies of 'Mills Open' available. This book is published by the Mills Section of the SPAB and lists nearly all mills open to the public.
As usual, the Havering Amateur Radio Society will be at the mill on National Mills Week-end. We greatly appreciate their support which has often brought in more visitors. They also operate 'ham' stations at Aythorpe Roding and Mountnessing Windmills on that week-end. Included in this newsletter is an extract from RadCom, the magazine of the Radio Society of Great Britain which is for amateur radio comparable to the SPAB Mills Section for mills.
Anyone who was in Romford Marketplace on the 3rd January might have seen two 'rescuers' pushing a display stand along the pavement. As many may have noticed, Littlewoods store was in the final stages of their closing-down sale. In the morning Sheila and I were in the store and I realised that the sale included the shop fittings. Accordingly Richard and I went to Romford in the afternoon and purchased a movable shelf fitting for use at the mill. We had to dismantle it in the street to get it into Richard's car, much to the amusement of some passers-by. Fortunately it was a day when one could park in the market!
