FROM THE CHAIRMAN
It is a privilege to be appointed as Chairman of the Friends. I have been a member since its inception. Due to work commitments, I have not played an active role but have lived by the Mill for many years and felt I should contribute more should an opportunity arise.
My first task must be to thank Martin Withers for holding the post so successfully during the last few months, having taken it in very difficult circumstances. I must also thank all the other Committee members for their continuing enthusiasm and hard work. Thanks also to those who assist the Friends with the maintenance of the Mill and with the Mill openings. Particular thanks are due Paul Kemp for the enormous improvements that have been made to the Mill.
It is some years now since both the Upminster Windmill Preservation Trust and the Friends of Upminster Windmill were formed. Despite the many improvements, the key aim of the Trust leasing the Mill from the Council and acquiring lottery funds for its restoration remains unmet. My intention as Chairman of the Friends is to give whatever assistance we can to the Trust to enable them to take this forward. This aim is shared by all the Committee Members of the Friends and we have already made our commitment clear to the Trust. I do hope we see some real progress. - DC
